Later today, I'll be updating BtHr Chapter One to version 0.1.1, which contains some bug fixes.
In the meantime, most bugs can be prevented by NOT adjusting the game's text speed. If you changed it and are encountering errors, open the game's options menu and lower the text speed back down to about 1/3 of the maximum value.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
(Yes, this is the third time changing the text speed has broken a version of BTH, I'm sorry.)

I had the game on near max text speed and didn’t have any bugs.
I'm almost positive it's just instant text speed that breaks it, but I always suggest not adjusting text speed at all to be safe.
